Six feet two and 242 pounds, LaDarius Owens, a red shirt freshman linebacker at Auburn, uses his work ethic and motivation to become the best player he can be.
He only began taking football seriously during his junior year in high school. His dream had always been to play D-I football and ultimately the NFL.
LaDarius’s key to success is his work ethic. He calls himself a “workaholic”, or someone who actually enjoys the workouts. He says that he physically cannot give 100% effort. He says that, “It doesn’t feel right” when he isn’t working out in preparation for games. He watches film and learns from his coaches.
His dream of playing D-I football was stalled upon his arrival to Auburn, when his coaches informed him that he would be a red shirt freshman. He took the news with humility and pushed himself to work hard in hopes of a playing spot on the team the next year. He said he “likes being the underdog, I’ve been the underdog my whole life”.
LaDarius Owens is a genuine player. In an era of less mature young athletes, he stands above and beyond. His work ethic and passion for the game are some examples, but he showed his true morals when he agreed to be interviewed for an Auburn University Journalism Seminar/Camp.
He fielded questions and explained his answers, touching on his success in a modest tone. Gracious for what football has given him, he repeatedly thanked his coaches and the people that supported him. He emphasized family and the power of camaraderie on a football team.
He showed his versatility as a student athlete, he was on the Dean’s List last semester, and his social skills were showcased in the interview. He carried himself with poise and showed his character. He could be a strong leader in the future for Auburn University.
