Auburn University’s paper, The Plainsman, has been an award winning newspaper since 1894. They have received the Pacemaker, an award for the top national college newspaper, 23 times. The thing that makes The Plainsman so different from other college newspapers is that it is entirely produced by students.
Around 30 students make up The Plainsman staff that, write, edit, design, and take the photographs for the college newspaper. The students of the staff are responsible to the paper and the campus. Student, Natalie Wade, the editor of The Plainsman, describes working for the college newspaper as being very time consuming. The students not only go to classes and do school work but also take on the extra responsibility in producing the newspaper.
Because the paper is weekly the students have a 4-5 day time period to construct a final draft of the newspaper before sending it out to be printed. The staff describes how in order for the process of producing the newspaper to work they must stick to deadlines. All jobs of the staff are very important. The staff describes how if one person’s deadline is late then the whole process is delayed. Wade says it can be hectic around the office because everyone must meet his or her deadlines. She says that any conflict that does come along has to do with deadlines.
Although the process seems rigorous, time consuming, and takes on a lot of responsibility, all members of the Plainsman said it was all worth it once it is published. The paper is heavily relied on at Auburn University and continues to get the attention of the readers.
