Many times student journalists find it difficult to interview athletes because of the athlete presenting himself as arrogant or not providing enough information. When LaDarius Owens walked in as if it was ordinary that a room full of strangers was applauding him I didn’t know what to expect. However, after only ten minutes into the interview I realized Owens is a relaxed guy that does not view himself as better than anyone. He grew up with a single mother and knows he can keep going with her and God by his side.
As an upcoming line backer for Auburn University, Owens started his career in football in Birmingham, Alabama playing for his high school, Jess Lanier, as Safety, Receiver, defensive end and line backer. His decision on playing for Auburn University was simple because of the family atmosphere.“ When I came to Auburn everyone really took me in and everyone treated me like I was family rather than just a football player,” states Owens. His teammates have become brothers and are now considered a part of his family. Owens explains everyone at Auburn genuinely cares about you.
Being an athlete for the Tigers may be difficult at times but Owens exceeds his responsibilities. His greatest character trait is having a high maturity level. With a high maturity level Owens has no problem being prepared to face any of his opponents, keeping up with his grades and dedicating himself to football. “I’m a workaholic. I always go the extra mile,” clarifies Owens. There is never an issue with Owens getting straight down to business.
Owens would not know where he would be if he was not playing football. Of course he would be attending school and majoring as a physical therapist but as far as schooling he had no idea which school it would be. In his future Owens envisions playing for the NFL but if it is not Gods will then his plan B is physical therapy. Owens is excited for his upcoming football season and reveals, “I don’t want to disappoint my fans or myself. Although some people say we have lost talent that is not true. We may have lost experience but the talent still remains.”
