The Southern Poverty Law Center is a non-profit organization that actively tracks extremist groups movements. Their goal is to cover the “world of extremism”.
They track anarchists, racists, and other organizations that harm or condone hatred towards a certain group.
The Ku Klux Klan torched their headquarters, located in Montgomery, AL, in July of 1983. However, the groups do not necessarily have to be violent to be considered an extremism group. Any group that voices hatred towards any other group is considered a possible extremist group.
But these extremist groups are smart. Their websites are very convincing in their message of racism and hate. They can almost convince the readers that their message isn’t radical.
The Law Center publishes magazines that identify and details the extremist groups. SPLC publishes three sections on its website. Robert Steinback, Deputy Editor of Intelligence Report, writes the “Fighting Hate” section of the SPLC. This section is dedicated to combating the groups that emanate hatred towards other people or groups of people. Sean Price, Manager Editor, writes the “Teaching Tolerance” section for the SPLC. This section is committed to teaching lessons that will hopefully counter the hate group’s movement.
Extremist groups target young kids and teenagers that are especially vulnerable. Some have run away from their families, while others began with no family. They are searching for a family and structure. These hatred groups can provide that support in exchange “for only a few tattoos”, Sean Price said. He also stated, “They are more into the family aspect, than the hatred aspect”.
The members of these hatred groups are scared and vulnerable kids looking for a home. They will give anything for this. The SPLC was created in order to educate children about modern day civil rights. Founded in 1971, the SPLC began as a small civil rights law firm.
Today it is a unique organization that nationally identifies and reports hate and radical groups to the government. No other group is similar to it, in the amount of national scope it has.
