Reflections on Workshop
Heading into this week I was excited to visit Auburn, get away from home, meet new people and learn if journalism was something of interest to me. My first day went almost as expected, I was able to make friends quickly not only with my roommate, but with many of the other students, even though there was a bit of awkwardness. The next few days, whether it was going to dinner, or playing games of football, I made friendships quick and easy. Although I came here for the purpose of writing, having a great time with new friends made my experience more than just about writing.
On the journalism side, I was excited to hear from experienced journalists in seminars, as well as sports journalists which really spiked my interest. Sports is my passion, and my hopes and aspirations include sports talk show and column writing. So obviously my week got a lot better when the group visited Auburn athletes for a mock news conference, as well as speaking with various sports columnists like Troy Johnson. I was truly surprised in seeing the amount photography played a role in journalism as a whole, as my camera skills went unnoticed until this week. Other surprises included the hard work that truly goes on behind the glory of television and being a reporter. Sarah Panko, a digital journalist for WRBL-TV in Georgia, came to speak to us during the course of the week and showed the true hard work and sweat that goes into reporting a story on television. By the end of the week, I had friendships that I am certain will last into the future, and a memorable experience at Auburn. Looking into the future, I learned how to create the perfect lead, the process of writing a good story, the amount of fact gathering required and the true work behind becoming successful in journalism. In addition, this week spiked my interest more in journalism, and I am looking forward to getting back to school and writing articles for my paper with the many ideas the workshop has provided me with. The entire week has expanded my knowledge and appreciation of journalism, hopefully leading to future success.
