News Story: Professor Nan Fairley
Expanding and improving student publication is important for any high school newspaper staff looking to excel in journalism. Professor Nan Fairley taught Auburn University high school journalism students Wednesday morning how to take their high school newspapers to the next level. There are various ways to increase newspaper publications and take your high schools newspapers to an elite level.
Professor Fairley stressed the importance of having a well-rounded dedicated newspaper staff that would be able to produce top-notch articles that the public would be interested in. Furthermore, many students who are currently a part of their high school newspaper staff claimed that having set assignments for articles as well as set schedules makes the entire process much faster and easier.
Although there were some students in the class who are not a part their school’s newspapers staff, many of those students ended up acquiring helpful knowledge that they will bring back to the high school. “I feel like she, Professor Fairley, provided everyone with a lot of support and great ideas especially for my high school because I can now help my high-school newspaper staff at my school”, claimed Ashley Tactac a rising senior at KIPP San Jose Collegiate. While there are students who are not a part of a newspaper staff, many students like Ashley gained valuable tips and suggestions from Professor Fairley that they can now bring back to the high schools to help improve their school’s newspaper.
Though most high school newspapers are successful in their schools, there are still many problems that they face due to budget cuts and a lack of subscribers. Some challenges include problems with printing and production. Although printing and production can be costly, there are several ways that newspaper staff’s can find alternative solutions to the budget cuts that many schools face in today’s economy. One way is to contact local newspapers because often many of the local newspaper companies can charge a low rate for printing out high school newspapers.
High school newspapers have the ability to succeed if given the right resources and if correct steps are taken to take their school’s newspapers to the next level. High school newspapers have the ability to expand and increase as more and more high school students are turning to the internet to receive information and news about their school’s.
