Imagine looking into the mirror and never viewing yourself as good enough for anyone. “You are beautiful no matter what they say,” Christina Aguilera shares with her fans. However, is what she preaches really the truth? Hollywood stars today have manipulated the minds of youth into believing otherwise about their body. Whether we realize it, celebrities have a major impact on the thoughts of high school students today.
What do Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Lindsey Lohan have in common? These so called ladies have a tendency of showcasing themselves as “pieces of meat” rather than intellectual human beings. After focusing on the lives and personalities of these celebrities, teenagers typically follow their lead. It is not necessary to advertise yourself half-naked in front of thousands of people. This act is causing young ladies around the world to walk in the same footsteps as these provocative stars.
Another feeling celebrities are causing in high school students is insecurity. If celebrities attract men by showing off inappropriately, teenagers are going to believe that is the only method of captivating men’s interest. In numerous cases the teenagers feel compelled to hide themselves from the world due to insecurities about their bodies. An unhealthy situation as this should not be continued.
Developing into a young woman can be difficult. Media is making it complicated for teenagers to be comfortable with whom they are. If skinny girls are all over the internet and television, then I can understand why women my age would feel insecure about their body image; compelled to “look like a celebrity.” A celebrity is supposed to be a role model, not a bad influence. Self image is a major influential factor in every woman’s life and to see someone base their image after celebrities is never meant to be harmful, but often leads to undesirable situations.
