The Rights and Responsibilities of High School Journalists
Over the years, high school journalists have been losing rights on what they can print in their papers. Big issues to journalists are censorship, libel, copyright and access to information. There have been numerous court cases concerning the First Amendment.
Hazelwood School v. Kuhlmeier took place in 1988. It reduced First Amendment protections for school-sponsored papers. Hazelwood doesn’t stomp free speech and doesn’t apply to Alabama.
Libel is a big issue in our society. Libel is publishing false information that harms a person’s reputation. It can be published through TV, paper, online, texting or cartoons.
No matter the court case, the truth is the absolute defense. This applies everywhere as long as you have enough evidence to back up your story.
Ethics is very important to journalists. Simply, do not publish something if it is not true or if it would hurt someone’s reputation unfairly. Be honest and fair.
Copyright law is important to everyone because it protects the works you have done. It can save the person money because people will have to go directly to them to get their work used.
The world of high school journalism is very different today. Both professional and student journalists have to pay attention to laws to stay out of the courts.
