There are two reasons why people uphold jobs, money and passion. Listening to Sarah Panko talk about her career in reporting will show any bystander that her decision for her career was based completely on passion.
Panko is a graduate from Marquette University in Wisconsin. After graduation Panko had a difficult time finding a job. Although Montana, Virginia and Japan offered reporting positions, she at last moved to Columbus, Ga and started her career at WRBL News 3.
Despite the fact, Panko was the editor for her high school newspaper. Her shift to becoming a digital journalist was based on realization of love for reporting and “newspapers going downhill.” Desiring telling stories is how Panko reveals her feelings. “I want to change the world,” explains Panko for the motivation on why she chose this career path. Granted she began journalism writing for a newspaper her love for journalism is the upmost aim on why digital journalism is important to her.
Downsides are a part of any career. While digital journalism has many plus sides, it is also stressful at times. There are not enough people, which requires Panko to operate her own camera and be a independent correspondent. Another issue is making mistakes. Panko states that if she were to mess up and say the wrong thing then there is no taking the mistake back. There is no room for errors.
Entering into digital journalism has its inconveniences however, Panko understands what it takes to master her obstacles. Panko is her own writer, editor, photographer and interviewer. At times Panko fills in for anchors covering Alabama and Georgia. This hard working also led her to producing her own show. It is a requirement to be a serious and smart writer.
Becoming an anchor for Chicago is in Panko’s future plans. She knows she started off small and wants to continue to work for a larger position. Panko wants to be the best she can be. “My work is the love of my life,” explains Panko.
