LaDarius Owens
By CJ Walker
LaDarius Owens is the pinnacle of success through hard work. Growing up in Birmingham, AL, Owens always had a passion for football. With a single mom, Owens had to grow up fast. He had to take care of his mom first and for most, but then himself. At a very young age, Owens had to get a job.
He was dedicated to everything he did so therefore he maintained decent grades, work hard at his job, and tried his best at football. Owens played for his high school, Jess Lanier and moved on to play for the Auburn Tigers after graduating in 2009.
Starting off at the bottom Owens had to work his way to the top. He maintained all of his grades in top classes while at the same time playing football. His genuine character shone through in the interview, with his accolades including The Dean's List and earning a D1 scholarship to Auburn.
In an era of immature young athletes, Owens is a refreshing breath with his student-athlete reputation. His homegrown values of a tight-knit community and camaraderie showcase him as a natural leader.
Owens states, “You can’t be great by just doing what’s required.”
He tells us that everyday whether it’s during football practice or with his homework he puts in his all plus more.
Team to LaDarius Owens is like family. He treats his teammates as if they are his brothers.
Owens tells, “My teammate lives far away from his home and last break I invited him to stay with me and my family. That’s how close we are!”
His coach encourages everyone to love each other like brothers. He makes them eat together, go to movies together, bowling, and much more. Owens doesn’t mind at all. He feels that this is how a true team should act.
“We are a true family. What you see is what you get.”
