An Hour With Scott Duff
WSFA News Channel 12 Director Scott Duff was the main character at today’s AU Journalism Workshop seminar. With 25 years experience, the topics he discussed were quickly noted.
The news director was anything but hesitant to brag about the news channel and all that it represents. Duff says WSFA is “the best TV station around.” His statement was instantly proven after learning that WSFA one of the top five-rated news channels in the country.
As if the statements made weren’t already praise worthy, Duff ads a few bonus facts involving viewing. One, the news website has 3.5 million page views. and second, the television broadcast on average has 60,000 views for the morning show. Of course, the viewing numbers depend on the current news; along with the hour and day it’s aired.
When asked about internships, Duff promptly told the audience, “I can’t express the importance of interning.”
“Ask when you’re able to do an internship at the school of your choice,” Duff added. After the tips were recorded, Duff shared that without his one time internship; he may not be where he is today.
Next on the list: Duff’s news story philosophy. Before ending the seminar with his complete take on he news business, he included extra tips. Duff says to the listeners, “I can’t stress enough, focus on your English, read, and be worldly.” Three points Duff mentioned were “creating your own luck, knowing people, and interning.” All of the topics, tips and pointers were marked in notepads and ears were focused on Duffs personal news story philosophy: “You have to give me a coupon. What kind of coupon am I giving you? Was it worth my time watching?”
Although the next quote was a result of a question asked during the middle of the seminar, it was a believable statement. In his free will, Duff announced, “Nothing’s more rewarding in this business than making a difference in peoples lives.”
