Second Chance

In 2010 at Flomaton High School, a junior boy got caught with a gun in his truck. He didn’t mean any harm. He had gone hunting the previous weekend and just forgot to take it out.
This guy was in the top ten of his class and a star football player. He was also a strong member at one of our town’s local churches. He could either choose to be expelled and not attend any campus or withdraw and go to another school in the county. He chose to be withdrawn.
A large group of our students protested so the school board would change the policy. Several other students even attended school board meetings. The board’s final decision was to not change the policy.
Our school has a zero tolerance policy. I feel the school board should change it to a common sense law. This law defends the good kids but yet it keeps the bad kids from bringing any weapons to school. Many Internet sites support this belief. Some people think that you should punish people who break the rules, but don’t destroy everything they have worked for. There have been certain cases where students in the end never get expelled or have to be withdrawn.
The common sense law goes back and checks the person’s records. This includes police records, school attendance and their grades. I believe all students deserve a second chance. The zero tolerance policy goes against that.
The State of Alabama should pass this common sense law. It could save many good students from being caught in bad situations.
