Whether it is from TV, cell-phones or the internet, WSFA gets to you. Earlier today I sat in with News Director Scott Huff of the WSFA News Station. His station is one of the top five ranked TV stations in the world.
“We play with the big dogs, for instance, when Auburn University went to the National Championship, we were there,” Huff said.
The station was formed more than 50 years ago, during the Civil Rights Movement. In the last three years, the stations quality has changed drastically. They have gained high definition coverage, unlike other news stations.
A key to a successful broadcasting station is keeping on top of technology. That and 25 years of experience help too! Huff feels that with a properly owned, quality TV station, your ratings will improve majorly.
“Our jobs have changed amazingly in the last two years, partly due to the increase in sells of the smart-phone,” Huff said. According to http://gigaom.com/2010/03/26/1-in-2-americans-will-have-a-smartphone-by-christmas-2011/, one in every two Americans will own a smart-phone by Christmas of 2011.
“I can’t stress how important it is to get an internship,” Huff said, “always ask when you can get one.” He continuously stressed this to our group of journalism students today.
Not only is the WSFA News Station top in broadcasting, but they also helped with Disaster Relief efforts. On April 27, 2011, powerful tornados ripped through the Southeastern Corridor of the U.S. The day after, WSFA had raised nearly $300 thousand dollars to send to the devastated part of Alabama.
“None of the credit really goes to us,” Huff said, “it all goes to the viewers.” Huff believes that the most important thing in his job, is knowing that he makes a difference.
“That’s the passion you have to have, knowing you made a difference,” Huff said. This is why Huff loves coming to work. He enjoys the quality of the people he works with.
In journalism, you have to find what you enjoy about your work, whether it is the people, or just the field you’re working in. Love your work and be passionate about it, no matter what.
