Column: How can newspapers attract younger readers?
In today’s world technology is dominating just about every media outlet including newspapers. There are now various ways for young people to access newspapers and technology is the number one reason for this. Although technology is changing the dynamic of newspapers, the younger generations are now turning to Facebook, Twitter, and online newspapers to receive their news. Young readers like to read today’s latest celebrity news, sports headlines, and the latest applications. In order to boost up the interest in newspapers around the world, attracting younger people to newspapers is the first step in doing so.
Many young people are now on the Internet more than anything else they do on a daily basis. Furthermore, in order to attract a younger crowd into the newspaper industry, it is important to connect to the younger generation by providing news stories that they will be interested in. For example, a new story on how Facebook is going to add new features to its website is an article that most of the public will be highly interested into. By continuing to provide news articles that most of the public ranging from the young to the elderly will only expand interest in that certain newspaper.
In addition, adding information that attracts high school students can be very beneficial because that newspaper company will be able to expand their name to young readers. If a high school newspaper staff is looking to find interesting articles for their own newspaper, they may look at their own local newspaper for ideas and if they do a well enough job than other students in that high school will become more interested in perhaps reading their local newspaper more often.
Expanding newspapers across America to the younger generations will also help future journalists because it can eventually lead to more job opportunities in the writing industry. Overall, trying to provide an interest to the younger crowd can deeply impact a newspaper greatly because it can further excel them to the next level. Newspapers can attract young readers by providing them with information that they will be interested in and by providing them with the thought that this newspaper can have an impact on their daily lives.
